The question nevertheless goes on “how do I make it in music”? The problem is, there isn’t one universal answer to that question. I used to joke in my early years of trying to improving in music that there isn’t a rock and roll college to go to. One that you can take classes for a few years and come out as a rock star. The reality is that many artists and groups have succeeded in the music industry in a number of different ways.
Let’s be honest, some just straight out got lucky. Perhaps they already had family in the entertainment business so it was only natural for them to have a career in it in addition. Some were in “the right place at the right time”. I view this one in two different ways. Let’s take a hypothetical situation. An artist is out to lunch and over hears someone talking about how he needs a great pop group for something he has coming up. It just so happens that the artist plays in a pop group, so he/she goes over to the person (who is an a&r rep for a big label) and gives him a CD and the rest is history. Now this clearly a fake situation, not likely to happen, and I used it purely for an example. But believe me stranger things have happened.
Now I want to focus on the fact that you can control being in the right place at the right time, The example above is pure luck. But there is a way for you to make your own luck. The idea is to make yourself obtainable to be in the right place at the right time. How do you do this? Well there are a number of ways. For starters you have to work hard. Work hard on your music and work hard on promoting and marketing yourself. If your goal is to make it in music then you need to use every day working on that. Whether it be on the actual music or on the business side, there is always something to be done and sitting around wondering when your big break will come isn’t it.
