In general, these dampwood classifications of termites are also like other termites that are considered as social insects. They have social classifications within their colonies. The highest form of termites would be the queen termite and the king termite who are responsible for increasing the number of termites in the colony. however, the lowest form is the worker termites who are working 24/7 in order to supply food for the complete colony and to ensure that their nest is properly maintained. However, in the dampwood kind of termite, there is generally no worker class in the caste and it is the nymph class who are doing the job of the worker termite.
The king and queen of the dampwood classification are generally brown in color, with sizes ranging from 1/2- to 5/8-inch. Usually, when a colony matures, it would release winged termites or called as swarmers. These swarmers are male and female termites with wings. These termites with wings are often the ones who are able to start their own colonies. Once these males and females have already paired, the wings will be discarded off.
As the name implies, this species of termites generally satisfy on wood that has moisture, such as decaying wood, decaying timber, and damp wood. Naturally, this kind of specie is found at the states in the Pacific coast.
These dampwoods are much larger as compared to the subterranean termites. The soldier termites of this specie have a large reddish brown head with large mandibles. This kind of termites is swarming at some time in January to October.
Unlike subterranean kind of termites, these dampwoods are not creating shelter tubes. This is because this specie is not requiring any contact with soil. Aside from that, they are only eating damp wood or woods that have high moisture content. Because of that, their colonies are usually wood dwelling.
They are commonly found among dead trees, stumps, and fallen timber. If your house or your structure has a wooden portion that is in contact with soil, it is very inclined to attract termites because the wood can absorb moisture from the soil. Any leaks in plumbing, pipes or drainage problems can also be factors that will cause termite infestation because all of these problems can cause moisture to the wooden structures; consequently, making it a conducive place for termites of the dampwood kind because these dampwood termites require wood with high moisture content.
